Shortly after the start, OWNERS LAD and SPEEDY WARRIOR lost their position when crowded for room between SPICY FRUITY which was carried out by SHINING DRAGON and COSMO SUCCESSOR which was carried in by RACING SPIRIT. Despite being ridden along in the early stages, FISHKING EXCELLENT failed to muster speed. Approaching the turn at the 800 Metres, RACING SPIRIT was checked to avoid the heels of MY FAITH which had been racing wide on the track and at this time was being taken back in an endeavour to obtain a position with cover. A short distance after this, MY FAITH got its head on the side, shifted in and was steadied away from the heels of COSMO SUCCESSOR. When questioned, O Doleuze (EXPEDITIOUS) explained when he had ridden the horse at its most recent start which was over 1600 Metres, he rode along in the early stages to obtain a forward position. He said as a consequence of riding EXPEDITIOUS along in the early stages, the horse proved difficult to settle when he was not able to obtain a position with cover. He said EXPEDITIOUS responded to his riding in the early part of the Straight, however, whilst being beaten a short margin, in his opinion its run ended short of the line. He said because of this he discussed with Mr B K Ng, trainer of the horse, that EXPEDITIOUS might be better suited dropped back in distance and ridden more quietly to enable it to finish its race off. He said today over 1400 Metres from a wide barrier he took EXPEDITIOUS back in the early stages to a rearward position, the horse travelled comfortably in the run, however, in the Straight did not quicken as he anticipated it would. He said in his opinion EXPEDITIOUS・ poor performance in today・s race was due to the horse racing :flat; on a quick backup. B Prebble (THUNDER VALLEY) explained because the horse has a history of proving difficult to settle, from barrier 3 he rode his mount forward to lead as instructed, however, in the Back Straight shifted wider in the hope that no other horse would improve on his outside. He said in the past when horses travelled outside THUNDER VALLEY, the horse had proved difficult to settle. He said approaching the turn at the 800 Metres he shifted THUNDER VALLEY back towards the rail, however, continued to race one horse away from the fence and despite being left alone in front, THUNDER VALLEY again would not relax for him. He said the intention had been to shift away from the rail in the Home Straight as it was thought the going might be better. He said when giving ground in the Straight THUNDER VALLEY was unbalanced in its action. THUNDER VALLEY was sent for an official veterinary inspection. After the race, THUNDER VALLEY was examined by the Veterinary Officer who said there were no significant findings other than the horse had lost its left front plate. CLEMENT ELITE, SOHNA and MOSHI MOSHI were sent for sampling.

Inside the final 50 Metres, D Whyte (AMAZING CHOICE) dropped his right rein. After the 50 Metres, TRAVEL LEADER was momentarily steadied away from the heels of NASA PEARL. B Prebble (SABRE AND GOLD) reported in the early stages of the race the horse did not stride out and felt unbalanced in its action. He said because of this near the 1600 Metres he looked down at the horse・s front legs. He said after this when left racing wide and without cover he allowed SABRE AND GOLD to stride forward, however, he was not able to clear runners inside and raced outside the lead. He said after straightening he placed SABRE AND GOLD under pressure and the horse did not respond to his riding, then after the 300 Metres when giving ground shortened up badly in its action and because of this he did not ride his mount out to the end of the race. SABRE AND GOLD was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of SABRE AND GOLD after the race did not show any significant findings. Over the final 200 Metres, SAFETY FIRST hung in and after the 100 Metres was steadied away from the heels of THUNDER DANCING. When questioned regarding the poor performance of WIN AGAIN, D Beadman said his mount travelled comfortably in the run, however, on straightening commenced to get its head up. He said in the Straight WIN AGAIN failed to close the race off. He said in his opinion WIN AGAIN raced :flat;, however, he did note the horse had been somewhat disappointing in the manner in which it had finished its recent races off. WIN AGAIN was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of WIN AGAIN after the race did not show any significant findings. GILDED FLIGHT, PLAN EX and THUNDER DANCING were sent for sampling.

RACE NO.8 (719) - THE HONG KONG RACEHORSE OWNERS ASSOCIATION TROPHY(HANDICAP) - Race Class 2 - 1400 Meters

FLAMING LAMBORGINI began awkwardly. In the early stages, HORACE・S CHOICE was taken back. After the 1200 Metres, HURRICANE DASH, which was proving difficult to settle, got its head up. Throughout the race, GALEN WIN travelled wide and without cover. O Doleuze (HORACE・S CHOICE) reported when placed under pressure after straightening his mount failed to respond to his riding and galloped as if something might have been amiss with the horse. After the race, HORACE・S CHOICE was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said an endoscopic examination showed a substantial amount of blood in the horse's trachea. Before being allowed to race again, HORACE・S CHOICE will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. KINGS FALCON and REGENCY DRAGON were sent for sampling.

RACE NO.9 (720) - PRIVILEGE HANDICAP - Race Class 2 - 1600 Meters

After being boxed, GEM OF CHIU TON became fractious and reared. GEM OF CHIU TON was removed from its stall and examined by the Veterinary Officer who said in his opinion it was suitable to race. After being re-boxed, GEM OF CHIU TON again became fractious, reared up and had its left front leg caught over the adjoining stall partition. The horse was again removed from its stall and examined by the Veterinary Officer who said in his opinion the horse was stiff in its action and as such was not suitable to race. Acting on this advice, the Stewards ordered the withdrawal of GEM OF CHIU TON. Before being allowed to race again, GEM OF CHIU TON will be required to perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. TIME SUPREME stood flat-footed at the start and lost a considerable amount of ground. Before being allowed to race again, TIME SUPREME will have to perform satisfactorily in a stalls test. AMPLE GAINS was slow to begin. Consideration was given to a protest/objection lodged by B Prebble, the rider of GALLANT CHAMPION, 4th placegetter, against MEDICO (G Boss) being declared the 3rd placegetter for alleged interference after the 1400 Metres. The evidence disclosed that after the 1400 Metres GALLANT CHAMPION was checked when crowded for room inside MEDICO which shifted in when not clear. Having in mind the manner in which both horses closed the race off in the Home Straight and the short head margin between them at the end of the race, the Stewards formed the opinion that had the interference which did take place not occurred GALLANT CHAMPION would have finished in front of MEDICO, therefore the protest/objection was sustained. Accordingly the amended placings became 1st, No. 7, DANESIS; 2nd, No. 12, WHIPLASH; 3rd, No. 8, GALLANT CHAMPION, and 4th, No. 10, MEDICO. At a subsequent inquiry, G Boss pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding in that after the 1400 Metres he permitted his mount to shift in when not clear of GALLANT CHAMPION, causing that horse which had been ridden along to make up ground to lose its rightful running and be checked. When GALLANT CHAMPION checked, it shifted out, causing SOUTH BREEZE to be carried out across the running of CHINA WIN which as a result struck the heels of SOUTH BREEZE, blundered and be checked severely. FIRM OFFER, which was following, was checked in consequence. In this incident, crowding was also caused to OPERATION SECRET and AMPLE GAINS. Having considered all the circumstances including the contributing factors to this incident, the Stewards believed it appropriate for G Boss to be fined a sum of $75,000 in lieu of a period of suspension which will cover 3 Hong Kong racedays. Near the 300 Metres, WHIPLASH was momentarily steadied and shifted to the inside of DANESIS to obtain clear running. After the 300 Metres, C W Wong (INDUSTRIAL MARVEL) dropped his whip. In the Straight, GALLANT CHAMPION hung in. Throughout the race, MEDICO travelled wide and without cover. CHINA WIN was sent for an official veterinary inspection. After the 200 Metres, FEARLESS was hampered and JOY AND FUN steadied when crowded for room between EXPRESS WIN (C W Wong) which shifted out and SUPER TRAVELLER which when giving ground initially was carried in slightly by SUNNY KING, then became unbalanced and shifted further. In this incident, SUPER TRAVELLER was checked to relieve pressure to runners on its inside. TOP HONOR, which was following, was steadied in consequence and shifted out. In all the circumstances, no action was taken. However, C W Wong was severely reprimanded and told in similar circumstances he would be expected to stop riding and straighten his mount. Over the concluding stages, EXCELLENT BOY hung in. In the Straight, JOY AND FUN hung in. Throughout the race, HAWKES BAY travelled wide and without cover. M Du Plessis (LUCKYME) explained he had been instructed to ride his mount in a position slightly forward of midfield with cover if possible. He said LUCKYME began fairly, he immediately took hold of his mount in an endeavour to obtain a position as instructed, however, when runners held their positions to his inside, he then took LUCKYME back further to ensure the horse had a position with cover and as a consequence travelled further back than was anticipated. He said LUCKYME proved difficult for him to settle in the early and middle stages and as a consequence failed to close the race off in the Straight. He added in the Straight LUCKYME was inclined to hang in. FEARLESS was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of FEARLESS after the race did not show any significant findings. SIGHT WINNER, EXCELLENT BOY and SUNNY KING were sent for sampling.
