Whyte's magical 947 sets a new record for HK winners

With the focus of the world on Sha Tin, champion jockey Douglas Whyte set a new record for winners by a jockey in Hong Kong when High Point snatched the money in the last strides of the London Handicap, the third race on the card.
Hugely popular with the punters, Whyte's

mount was supported into red-hot favouritism on the Danny Shum-trained galloper. The winner returned at HK$27 and made the landmark win, his 947th in an amazing career, doubly popular.
Whyte had equalled Cruz's record at Happy Valley on Wednesday, 5 December, when he won a second Cathay Pacific International Jockeys' Championship.

"It's been an amazing run. It's taken ten and a half years and to be honest I never dreamt I would achieve something like this when I started out. But as I've got closer to the record, it became a goal of mine to beat it. To finally do it is quite sensational," Whyte said after receiving a gold dish to commemorate the achievement from the Hong Kong Jockey Club's Chief Executive Officer, Mr Winfried Engelbrecht-Bresges, and Mr William A Nader, the Club's Executive Director of Racing.
"I'll be freewheeling from now on because every winner I have will be a new record. To get one thousand winners is my next target; the four digits would be great.

"I would also like to win my eight jockeys' championship because that would be another record. Then freshen up in the summer, come back and see how far I can take things."

韋達締創 947 場頭馬紀錄

正當全球焦點集中在沙田馬
場之際，冠軍騎師韋達今天在第三場賽事倫敦讓賽中主策「高點」，於最後數步奪得冠軍，刷新騎師勝出最多頭馬的香港紀錄。
由沈集成訓練的「高點」，賽前被馬迷捧成大熱門，最後以二點七倍的賠率勝出，並為韋達帶來其在港的第九百四十七場頭馬。
韋達於十二月五日在跑馬地第二次勝出國際騎師錦標賽當日，已平了由告東尼所創下的最多頭馬紀錄。
香港賽馬會行政總裁應家柏及賽馬事務執行總監利達賢，今天向韋達頒發金碟，以表揚他取得這項卓越成就。韋達其後表示：「這場賽事實在別具意義。經過十年半的時間，我終於打破此項紀錄，坦白說，這是我起初做夢也沒有想過的，但當我逐步向紀錄邁進時，我便以打破紀錄為目標。最終能夠成功，我感到非常振奮。」

韋達續說：「由現在起，我可以在全無壓力之下參賽，因為我日後每贏一場頭馬，都是一項新紀錄。我下一個目標，就是取得一千場頭馬。頭馬達到四位數字，實在令人興奮。」
「我亦希望能夠第八次奪得冠軍騎師殊榮，因為這將會成為另一項紀錄。然後我會在歇暑期間放鬆一下，來季再接受新的挑戰。」韋達道。
