in the four-legged series on Saturday but did better on Sunday by winning the final leg, the Golden Spur Trophy over 1800m on dirt, on a three-year-old colt named Dynamic Grow.
The perennial Hong Kong champion had earlier finished seventh in the third leg, the Golden Saddle Trophy.
Whyte, however, made the best of some outside rides on the Sunday card and he won the fifth race on Roll Of The Dice for trainer Katsuhiko Sumii, winner of the Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Mile with Hat Trick in 2005 and who also trained the Melbourne Cup quinella a year late with Delta Blues and Pop Rock.
Whyte returns to action in Hong Kong at the Cathay Pacific International Jockeys' Championship (CXIJC) at Happy Valley on Wednesday 5 December when he needs just two more winners to equal the local record of 946 victories set by Tony Cruz.
Making the same journey from Japan for the CXIJC are last weekend's Japan Cup hero, Yasunari Iwata, who tied with Whyte in fifth place and Andrasch Starke, who finished 10th in the Series.
