HKRJ's SPEED MAPS
the BEST way to analyze Racing Form

One of the more difficult elements in the process of handicapping a horse race is actually learning how to read and understand racing-form pages. Once you have a grasp on the fundamentals you then have the significant mental task of trying to compare all of the information about one horse with all the other data you have digested about the other horses in a race. Not the most efficient method available today!

Traditional form sheets do a good job in producing racing form information, however the presentation of this information is typically one dimensional and cumbersome at best. The age of the computer has helped, but again information is frequently presented in a PDF (printed format) instead of capitalizing on the power of technology.

Of course there are computer applications which go beyond this but these solutions are normally expensive and allow for little flexibility. And in many cases these "applications" are no more than replications of printed material. Another drawback with most commercially available form applications is the absence of "Speed Map" information. Speed Maps - the mapping of how horses match up in racing style - is a major component in the analysis of trying to project just how a race will be tactically run.

The HKRF and HKRJ [website] have taken on the challenge to build a "Better Mouse Trap" and now offers Free of Charge, an application which overcomes the deficiencies mentioned above.

Our SPEED MAPS module requires Excel© and a minor knowledge of this software would be helpful. Excel© has powerful features which enable you to manipulate the racing data. We have used Excel's features of sorting, filtering and conditional colour-coding to enhance the presentation of the racing information.

Our SPEED MAPS Module, like all our other services, is FREE with no hidden charges.

The SPEED MAPS for the race meeting of September 23 are available for DOWNLOAD HERE.

Future SPEED MAPS files are available via E-mail on a
FREE Subscription Basis. Just REGISTER for this and/or any of our other Services. The best way to experience this application is to download it and just use it!

In my next article I will talk about specific features of
the SPEED MAPS and how to maximize your analysis process.

Bio on Earl Klein

Co-founder and Racing Editor of the Hong Kong Racing Journal since it's inception in 1995. During this period I have provided consulting services regarding Hong Kong racing to both end-users and corporate clients, such as Race Tracks, Off-track Betting Services, Bookmakers & TABs, On-line information services, etc.

For almost 10 years the HKRJ provided a Custom Service to the Hong Kong Jockey Club (HKJC) which focused on a pre-race analysis report for the Chief Steward (Stipe), during the tenures of John Schreck and Jamie Stier.

A number-cruncher for my 'day job' and an enthusiastic part-time programmer with a love of horseracing, the analysis of Hong Kong Racing has been a natural fit to both my skills and hobby.

I enjoy making Hong Kong Racing a more level playing field so if you've got an opinion or a suggestion, please don't hesitate to drop me a line.
